These beech trees are close to the east entrance to the outer circle of stones at Avebury. There is a myth that this group of trees provided inspiration for J. R. R. Tolkien’s ‘walking trees’ or ‘Ents’ in The Lord of the Rings. People tie ribbons to the lower branches with wishes written on them. Opinion on this tradition is divided. Many, including myself, believe this desecrates the trees and they should be left in their natural state without the colourful ribbons.
