Pastels enable an artist to create wonderful effects indicating mist, heavy snow, the play of light on water or trees, or other special effects. I love the subtle greys and pinks and the ability to merge colours. One can also achieve very bright colours! It’s a very rewarding format. Drawing and observative are an imperative for any artist. I particularly enjoyed a course run by the Aborealist artist, Fiona McIntyre, at Marlborough College Summer School in 2018, which enabled participants to use an incredibly wide range of drawing materials.
